THE PROCESS

I aim to achieve completely un-posed images that communicate the qualities of the animal that I am painting.

"FLYING" DOG PAINTINGS:

1. I will need to meet your dog, with you, and get to know him or her. Each dog has its own "personality" and this is what I like to communicate through the paintings. I take up to 72 photographs of each dog, then select the photos I will use on the basis of which ones seem to capture the dog's qualites in a natural and candid way. It is much better for the dog and the portrait/s if the photo session/s take place in the dog's own environment. They relax and express themselves in a normal way on their own turf.

2. In the studio I prepare freehand drawings of the selected photos, then draft the painting.

3. The paintings are created in acrylics and light reactive media which shimmer in varying light. Clients have a choice of organza or canvas. The piece illustrated above was created on organza, enhancing the shimmer that I aim for in the portraits.

4. The entire process can take up to three months, depending on the size and complexity of the painting, and the co-operation of the angel-dog.

"FLYING" WOLF/ WOLF-DOG PAINTINGS:

Taking into account the very different qualities of wolf-dogs, the process is broadly the same as for dog portraits. I have three years' experience of interacting with wolf-dogs, 24/7. This has given me a thorough appreciation of the degree of protectiveness their humans feel towards them and of how complex and subtle working with them is. Since they can be stranger-wary and camera-shy, quiet patience by their "owner" and me is essential before even the first photo (thanks to zoom lens) can be attempted. The photographic, drawing, and painting steps are essentially the same as above, but the getting to know you and "permission" from the wolf-dog phases take as long as they take. These variables dictate how long the whole process will take.

"FLYING" TIGER PAINTINGS:

Same sequence as above - photographs (under controlled conditions supervised by the animal's handler/ owner) in the animal's own environment, followed by drawing and painting in the studio.

VARIATIONS

Portraits can be created in variations of up to 7 figures - your dog at varying angles. (FIGURE = each painted image of the dog in the painting; e.g. their are two figures in the picture below.) Sizes are 2' x 3', 3 'x 5', 3' x 6', and larger by arrangement.

Prices vary according to complexity and size - by negotiation.
